The Middle East is an area where car is king and fuel is low-cost, typically leaving little incentive to find more environmentally-friendly ways of moving around.
But this year, as protests across the Middle East have actually pressed up the cost of oil, the problem of discovering alternative sources of fuel has come into sharp focus.
