Driving License Category A2

The A2 category of driving license allows you to operate motorcycles without sidecars and have an engine power of 35 kW. The power/weight ratio of the motorbike must not exceed 0.2kW/kg.

This driving licence was designed to let you get your first small motorcycle driving license early and then progress to the A2 licence with a higher engine power.

Scooters and motorcycles

The second stage of motorcycle license is the driving license category A2. It allows you to drive mopeds and small motorcycles of up to 50cc. This class permits you to gradually increase the power of your vehicle, and also to imagine larger engines. The test is a little more difficult than that of the first category, and you need to study more to prepare.

The category A2 driver's licence is valid up to the age of 24. It is valid together with the category A1 car driving licence or as a provisional driver's license. If you are over 24 years old, however you require a full category A driving licence to drive motorcycles that have more than 35 kW.

When you reach the age of 16 you'll need to pass the A2 category motorbike test. You must pass the test before you turn 18. After two years, you are able to be upgraded to category A.

After passing the test for category A2, you will be allowed to drive a motorcycle, either with or without sidecar, and vehicles with up to 35 kW of power. These vehicles must have a power/weight of no more than 0.02 kW/kg and cannot be derived directly from a vehicle with twice the maximum power.

If you have passed a two-part moped or motorcycle test of lower category as of the 1st July 1996 then you are able to skip the theory test and take the test in practice. You can ride a small moped or scooter equipped with L plates or obtain the new AM licence that allows you to ride up to 50cc bikes with a maximum speed of 45mph. The AM licence is valid if you've passed your theory test and have completed nine hours of driving training at a driving academy.

Four-wheeled vehicles

This category covers all motorized vehicles that have four wheels, excluding buses and passenger cars. This category also includes utility vehicles such as pickups vans, panels and pickups. Motorhomes, campers, and lorries are also covered. This category also includes vehicles such ambulances, hearses and carryalls that are designed to carry eight or more people or have a weight limit of 750kg or more. Drivers who have obtained an A1 licence may drive vehicles of this type with trailers that have an authorized maximum weight of up to 750kg.

You must have passed the theory test to drive a vehicle in this category. You will need to complete 12 90-minute lessons on basic material, as well as 4 90-minute lessons on the additive (category AA2). The test for the theory has a pass mark of 70%.

If you pass the theory test, you'll have to pass a practical driving test on private property and on public roads. After passing both tests, you will be issued an application for a driving license. This request must be presented to the local authorities three years after passing your practical test.

After you pass your driving test, it is possible to start driving vehicles that fall in the category of A2. In some countries, once you have a full A1 license for two years, there's no requirement to take an additional test to get an A2 driving licence that permits you to operate motorcycles up 35 kW. This lets you get familiar with smaller two-wheelers before moving to more powerful machines.

If you have a driver's licence of category A2, you are able to use a tricycle so long as it has an engine capacity of 125cc, and an output power of 11kW. This category was previously part of the A license. Drivers who were issued a full category B licence before 19 January 2013 were entitled to ride mopeds, too and continue to enjoy this privilege.

Motor vehicles with 5 or more wheels

This category includes vehicles equipped with motors specifically designed to be used on roads for transport of passengers or goods. These vehicles must include at least 2 or 3 wheels that are in contact with the ground as well as a driver's chair or saddle, and a motor that is able to reach speeds of 20 miles per hour or more. These vehicles are usually equipped with a steering wheel as well as brakes. They can also be steered, and travelled in reverse. In some instances, the hood of these vehicles can be opened. Historically, this classification has applied to trucks (van, mini-van, panel, pickup, sport utility) and buses that hold 16 or more passengers. However, a different set of federal requirements that govern uniform licensing standards for commercial vehicle drivers uses a slightly different definition which excludes vehicles with gross weight ratings of 26,001 or more.

The category A2 driving licence can be used to drive moped, motorized bicycle or motorcycle. This type of driving license is only valid for motors that have a maximum cylinder volume of 125 cubic centimeters, or a maximum power of 15 kilowatts. This license can also be used for driving tricycles with motors. This license class requires an age minimum of 16 years old. Physically disabled people could also be eligible to drive motor tricycles in category A1 or A.

Some people choose to get an operator's license. This is applicable to vehicles with up to 8 passenger seats and a maximum mass of 3,500kg. Driver's licenses allow them to tow trailers up to 750kg MAM. They are also able to operate a tractor or a construction equipment with a trailer that weighs up to 3,500kg MAM.

NHTSA must ensure that its guidelines are up-to-date as the designs of various types of three-wheeled or two-wheeled vehicles continue to evolve. Manufacturers, importers, and import specialists frequently request interpretations from the agency on the proper classification of vehicles. NHTSA created a set guidelines that will help guide the classification. These guidelines include:

Motor vehicles that have trailers

Category A2 comprises motor vehicles with trailers. These are not driven by drivers, but are pulled by larger vehicles like cars. For example, a tractor pulling trailers falls under this category, as would small trucks made to carry loads, such as those employed by plumbers or painters to carry tools and supplies to a work site. The maximum allowed mass (MAM), for this class, is 8,250kg.

To drive vehicles in this category you must have passed the theory test for category A1 or have obtained a driving license by direct entry. You may also be required to pass a driving test depending on the type of vehicle you want to drive.

The licence you receive for category A2 is valid for three years from the date on which you take your theory test. To keep it valid, you must renew prior to the expiration date.

In addition to the categories above, you can also get a licence to drive other vehicles that have special requirements. For instance, you'll need a special license to drive a large-sized goods vehicle, which is classified as category C. This requires a thorough understanding of special regulations for the transport of dangerous products.

A car driving licence in category B permits you to drive a combination of an automobile and a trailer that don't fit the conditions of category C. This is where code 96 comes in. Code 96 is added to your licence for category B drivers licences after you have completed your theory test and practical test, however, your trailer and vehicle aren't eligible for prawo jazdy kat a category C licence under the norms.

You must hold a driving license in category B for at least two years and pass both a theory as well as a practical test. You must also have attended an exclusive course and received additional training to be able to drive this. This is known as a driver's education course.
